Contemporary Affairs
Contemporary Affairs will be a writing intensive class. It will focus on current events as the year goes along as well as contemporary issues facing the world today. The theme of the class will center around globalization. Students will take a look at specific issues, problems, advancements, and events and link them back to relate to a new globalizing world. Some specific topics include: genocide, human rights, terrorism, US policy, and also environmental issues. Students will be required to learn and understand topics like these and discuss them in both verbal and written form. Students prior beliefs will be challenged as they learn multiple views over various subjects. This is not to confuse students but rather to provide them an understanding of all points of view so they are more educated and founded in their own beliefs. The goal is for students to develop a set of values and beliefs through the study of Contemporary Affairs by challenging pre-existing values or opinions to either alter or reinforce. Also, students will gain the knowledge over current issues, understand different view points, and make their own opinions regarding the issues while sticking to the theme of the class and relating them to globalization.
Grade Breakdown
Students will also be required to complete a short writing assignment almost each week. These writing assignments will be over various topics that have been discussed during class. Each week, for roughly 15 weeks, students will turn in a writing assignment worth 10 points. Weeks they will not have to turn in writing assignments will be when students are working on their papers and also their presentations.
