Civil Rights Unit Exam- April 23rd
This exam will encompass all of the Civil Rights Unit which started at the beginning of February. This covered sections about the African American civil rights (including radical African American activism with Malcolm X and the Black Panthers), Native American civil rights, the youth and counterculture movement, feminism, and the government's role in it all. .It will be worth approximately 30% of the entire semester grade. It will be an all essay test consisting of 2 questions. Students will choose one of the two questions and respond with a well developed essay. They will be graded as if they are taking the Paper 3 exam and thus will be graded using the Paper 3 rubric. The score from the rubric will then be converted into a grade.

Civil Rights Unit Readings- Due April 20th
Readings for the upcoming test will be due April 20th, the Monday before the unit exam. Students will need to read through all the sections assigned in the book and submit notes over each of the sections. This will be worth 100 points and will go into the homework portion of the grade book. It is the largest of all the assignments in the homework section so it is imperative students do not procrastinate and turn the notes in on time.

Hippie Free Write- Due March 23rd
Free write a half page to full page about what you already know about the counterculture movement and your thoughts and feelings regarding the movement.
- What are their overall thoughts?
- What did the movement stand for?
- What are their feelings toward hippies?
- Would they have joined the counterculture movement?

MLK Jr. vs. African American Radical Activism Debate- March 6th
“The rise of radical African American activism (1965-1968) damaged the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King to achieve racial equality in the United States.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Students in class will be divided into groups and assigned a side to argue. They will then debate the other group from the perspective they were assigned.

School Desegregation Assignment- Due March 6th
Use the following document to answer the following questions:
1. Explain the origins and roots of segregation in Waterloo, Iowa (pgs. 1-3). 2. Analyze the chart on pg. 6 of the report. Take a look at a map of Waterloo. Notice, where all the schools are located. Now what schools are NOT listed? Where are they located? What can you conclude about these observations? 3. Summarize school desegregation in Waterloo (pages 5-14). Pages 18-33 4. What role did the media play in desegregation efforts? 5. Groups will be created and each group will receive a copy of the Topic Outline for the chapter. This outline lists all the topics that need to be covered and learned by the students. Students will work as groups to research the information and explain it in an artifact. This artifact will act as evidence that the information has been learned. The artifact can come in multiple forms that should be chosen by the group.
Students may work independently but will then have to research all the topics by themselves. It is highly recommended they split up the work with a group. Each group will need to submit their artifact as a group. The group artifact should include all the information found by the group. Each individual will be responsible for teaching their portion of the information to the rest of their group in a 5 minute presentation in class. Students absent this day will need to present their information using Screencast-o-matic to create a video presentation. Modern Nations Exam- February 5th |

The Modern Nations Unit exam will be the same as the last exam. There will also be readings for the exam due the Monday before the exam takes place. Those readings can be found on the Modern Nations page of this website under IB History and Year 1.

Paper 3 Question- Due December 23rd
Students will answer the question as a Paper 3 Essay in Google Docs. The question is:
Assess the role of railroad construction in modernization of any two countries in the region between 1865 and 1929.
Students should follow closely to the standards in the Paper 3 rubric which can be found on my website.
Students will print out their essays when done and give it to another student in the class. Each student then will need to assess the essay using the rubric and score the essay. The marker should be able to defend the score they gave and provide DETAILED feedback for the persons essay.

Paper 1 Test Booklet- Due December 19th
Every class period, students answer questions from the Paper 1 Test Booklet. Students should have questions 1b & 3 done from the May 2010 Paper 1 Exam. They should also have question 1a & 1b as well as have the origin and purpose of the first source in question 3 done for the November 2010 Paper 1 Exam.
Review Comments (Extra Credit)- Due December 23rd
I have made comments on all the Historical Investigations if they have been turned in. Students should get on Turnitin.com and review the comments I have made. When they do, it will show up that they have seen my comments and I will award them extra credit points.
Journal from an Immigrant- Due November 26th
Students will choose to be an immigrant from the country and time period of their choice. They will also choose a region they are emigrating to. They will then need to write a journal or a letter about their experiences as an immigrant to the new region. Students should include factually historical information based on what has been discussed in class and based on what they have researched. Students may be creative and tell stories in these journals, but they should base everything in historical truth. They may also use real examples from their own family or mention events that have happened in fictional writing. They should also be ready to share their journals when they come back to class.
Historical Investigation First Draft- Due November 14th
Students will need to turn in the first draft of their historical investigation. It will not be graded but they will receive points for it and feedback. Drafts should be turned in through Turnitin.com. Information regarding the historical investigation can be found on this website and on the Internal Assessment guide to the right. The historical investigation should be written the same as the Internal Assessment since it is a practice.

Nation-Building Unit Exam- November 7th
This exam will encompass all of the Nation-Building Unit which started at the beginning of September. This covered sections about the Constitution, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Conditions of Social Groups, the Transition of Canada, and Development of Caudillo rule. .It will be worth approximately 30% of the entire semester grade. It will be an all essay test consisting of 2 questions. Students will choose one of the two questions and respond with a well developed essay. They will be graded as if they are taking the Paper 3 exam and thus will be graded using the Paper 3 rubric. The score from the rubric will then be converted into a grade.

Historical Investigation Thesis- Due October 31st
Students will need to post a thesis statement to Turnitin.com to help prepare for the historical investigation. A thesis statement is what one intends to prove in their paper. Also, students should begin researching and finding sources so they will be ready to start writing the HI on November 10th.

Two Sources- October 9th
Submit two scholarly sources you intend to use for your historical investigation to Turnitin.com. Remember, a scholarly source can either be a primary or secondary source that has been peer reviewed. Some examples of scholarly sources are newspapers, books, interviews, journals, and many more. Rarely ever are websites scholarly sources unless they are part of a newspaper or journal.
One easy way to find scholarly sources is to use Google Scholar. When you use this search engine, it will only search sources that are considered scholarly.
